History & Social Sciences
Mission Statement
The History and Social Sciences Department's mission is to help prepare students for success in college and later life through a challenging curriculum, one that asks them to think critically while developing skills of inquiry, critical analysis, and effective communication. It is the Department’s mission to foster an appreciation for the relevance of history and the social sciencesin general and across academic disciplinesas tools for understanding the increasingly global nature of our world. |
Philosophy Statement
Responsible citizens of a pluralistic, global society must possess both an understanding and appreciation of different cultures and the historical roots of our world as well as the skills and temperament to critically analyze the issues facing societies today. The skills of the social scientist are critical in this regard. Therefore our students must grapple with complex data, reconcile conflicting interpretations, and read critically as they learn to remember important information, gain a solid sense of historical chronology and explore various methods of conceptualizing society and the issues in the world today. |
